What to Wear

Snow sports are an excellent way to begin or maintain a fitness program during the winter, because they help develop aerobic capacity and muscle strength. It is important to note, however, that people can enjoy snow sports at a basic level, even if they aren't in peak physical condition. A walk on gently rolling terrain in snowshoes or cross country skis is one way to include snow sports in a beginning exercise program.

Dressing properly will make any winter day outside more enjoyable, especially when taking kids along. The best way to dress for cold weather is to wear multiple layers of clothing. This approach gives you flexibility to add or remove layers, depending on the temperature or level of activity. Typically, winter sport participants wear three layers: wicking, insulating and weather protection.

Even though it's cold outside snow sport participants tend to sweat, which is why the wicking or base layer is important. This layer is worn next to the skin, usually in the form of thermal underwear. To stay warm, dry and comfortable in the winter climate, wear thermal underwear made of a synthetic fiber such as polyester.

The insulating or middle layer is used to keep heat in and cold out. A sweater, sweatshirt or vest made of fleece or wool (which naturally wick away moisture) is ideal for this layer.

The weather protection layer or exterior layer is used to guard against the elements of winter. This layer repels moisture, blocks wind and allows perspiration to escape to the surface of the article of clothing. The weather protection layer is worn in the form of a snow sport jacket and pants made of specially designed breathable/waterproof fabrics.

Winter sports are a great physical activity for the entire family, but for the most enjoyment, remember to wear your three layers.
